The Summer of No Pants Skirt Sewing Challenge - Week One

As I mentioned last week I am participating in The Summer of No Pants Skirt Sewing Challenge that Marigold is hosting at Hideous!  Dreadful!  Stinky!

Here is the skirt that I made this week for the first week of the challenge

This was the first skirt I have ever made for myself.  I have made skirts for the kids, but I have never made a skirt for myself.  I'm not really a skirt person, but I really want to be.  I think that's why the challenge appeals to me.

Part of the challenge was to make one skirt from your fabric stash, make one skirt a reconstruction out of old clothes, and to make one with a non-elastic waist.  This was my skirt made from material from my fabric stash.  It's a knit fabric that I snagged out of a remnant bin a while back for next to nothing.  I had no idea what I was going to do with it, but I knew I wanted it.  By the way, did I mention that I despise working with knit?  Absolutely despise it.

I used Simplicity pattern number 3634 for the skirt.  It's a winter pattern, but I really liked the skirt.  It was simple to put together, and was the perfect pattern for my first skirt.

Now next week, I plan to tackle my skirt with a non-elastic waist.  I am going to use a zipper.  I have never sewn a zipper in before.  NEVER.  I have always avoided patterns that require zippers like the plague.

  1. Congrats on your first skirt: very summery!

Zippers are more intimidating than difficult IMO. There's so much helpful sewing info online if you need help. Try a google search for "zipper tutorial" and I'm sure you'll find some good blog tutes or YouTube videos. Stick with "regular" zips for now, and leave the "invisible" ones for when you've had a bit more practice.
